Rich's feet were bothering him again this morning (plus he's developed another large blister on his right heel), so he decided to take a taxi to Sahagún. We all had an early breakfast together and then the three of us left Caldadilla before 7:45 am.
Our route today was relatively flat, although not quite as boring as yesterday. A good portion was along the sendas, but some was on quiet country roads. We passed through a number of small towns: Ledigos, Terradillos de Templarios, Moratinos and San Nicolas del Real Camino, but the only place we actually stopped for more than 5 minutes was at a small bar/café in the town of Ledigos.
At the table next to us was a young German girl with a number of large blisters on both feet. One of the other pilgrims (an Irish woman Rich had met the day before) was trying to help her bandage her feet. The owner of the bar/café was talking to them in Spanish, but none of us understood what he was saying. He then made a phone call to someone. A few minutes later, a local woman came into the bar and immediately went over to the young girl to offer some help. She put iodine on the blister and covered it with what looked like a thin sanitary pad and then taped it all down. There truly are "angels" on this Camino.
Later, as I was walking with the young German girl (Cristine) she mentioned that the blister the Spanish lady had treated was not bothering her at all. She asked me what I thought she had used to cover it and when I gave her my opinion she answered that she had thought the same. We both agreed this would be a much cheaper blister remedy than buying Compeed at the pharmacy. I'll have to suggest this to Rich for his blisters!
As I reflect back on this episode, I come to the same conclusion as I have when witnessing other random acts of kindness. There truly are "angels" on this Camino.
We now have 16 more stages, 17 mores days and 230 more miles to Santiago. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we continue our journey westward.
Buen Camino
