After having heard horror stories about the walk into León, we almost opted to join many of our fellow pilgrims and take a bus from Mansilla to this bustling city. I'm so glad we didn't as the walk was very pleasant and not at all like the slog into Burgos a few days ago. The route has changed significantly in the last few years and there was no dangerous crossing of the N-120 freeway or long hike through the industrialized section of León. Instead, we were re-routed to what had to have been the highest point in León (we passed several microwave and radio towers) and then back down into the heart of the city. There was a little more climbing than what we had anticipated, and Rich's feet complained about some of the downhill, but all in all, it was a pleasant surprise from what we were anticipating.
León is a vibrant city with a varied history. It was a Roman military garrison and base for its VIIth Legion, hence the name - León, from Legion. It was the capital of the old kingdoms of Asturias and León and later was conquered by Visigoth, Moor and finally Christian forces. Roman remains support the medieval walls and throughout the old town there are examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and neo-Gothic architectural styles. Tomorrow we plan to visit many of these sites.
We now have less than 200 miles to Santiago! Only 13 more stages, 14 more days and 195 more miles to our destination. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
